If you are pricing a heat pump for your Mar Vista home, the first thing to know is that the heat pump installation cost is not one number. It moves with the size of the house, the way air reaches each room, the state of your electrical panel and the shape of your ducts. A cold snap on the Westside is a good time to ask, because the old wall furnace or tired gas unit is suddenly on your mind.
What a heat pump install includes
A heat pump is one system that heats and cools. In a typical Mar Vista home that means an outdoor unit, an indoor unit and the connections between them. A full install covers more than the equipment:
- The outdoor unit and the indoor air handler or wall heads
- Refrigerant lines and the electrical connection
- A condensate drain and a pad or bracket for the outdoor unit
- A new thermostat or control that matches the system
- The permit, the inspection and the startup check
Since 1 January 2025, new residential split heat pump systems are made with lower-GWP refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32. That is a change in the equipment, not something you have to manage. Your quote should simply name the system it is pricing.

What sets the price: capacity, ducted or ductless, electrical panel, ducts
Four things do most of the work in the quote.
- Capacity. A larger home or a home with a lot of glass needs a bigger system. Oversizing is as bad as undersizing, so the size comes from a load calculation, not a guess.
- Ducted or ductless. A ducted system uses the air paths you already have. A ductless system puts a head in each room it serves. Both are valid. The right pick depends on the layout and on how many rooms you need to heat.
- Electrical panel. A heat pump draws power. If your panel has no spare room, or the service is older, the electrical work can change the total more than the equipment does.
- Ducts. Old or leaky duct runs may need repair or sealing before a new system can do its job.
| Factor | Pushes the price up | Pushes the price down |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | Large or open floor plan | Small, well-shaded home |
| Air delivery | Many ductless heads | One ducted system on good ducts |
| Panel | Upgrade or new circuit needed | Spare capacity already there |
| Ducts | Repair, sealing or testing | Sound runs in good shape |
If your home has no usable ducts, a Ductless Mini Split can be the cleaner route. If the ducts are there but worn, our Ductwork Services team can say what they need.
Mild coastal winters and sizing
Mar Vista winters are mild by the coast, and that shapes the sizing. A heat pump here does not need to be built for a hard freeze. It needs to be matched to your house, your windows, your insulation and how you live in it.
Two homes on the same street can need different systems. A small post-war ranch with good shade is not the same job as a two-story with west-facing glass. We size from the house, not from the street.
LADWP electric service and LADBS permits
Electric service in Mar Vista comes from LADWP. That matters for a heat pump because the system runs on electricity, and the panel and service need to handle the new load. Natural gas in the area is supplied by SoCalGas, which is useful to know if you are replacing a gas furnace and want to know what happens to the old gas line.
Replacing a furnace, heat pump, AC or ductwork in California is permitted work. In Mar Vista the permit comes from LADBS, the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety. We handle the permit as part of the job, so you are not chasing a counter on your own.
Title 24 Part 6, California's Building Energy Efficiency Standard, can also come into play. Depending on the scope, it can require duct sealing and a duct leakage test, verified by a third-party HERS rater who is not the installer. That is one more reason to look at your ducts early, before the quote is final. You can read more about the area on our Mar Vista page.
The written install quote
A good heat pump quote is written down and it is written before work starts. Here is what it should show:
- The make and model of the system, and its capacity
- Whether the job is ducted, ductless or a mix
- Any electrical panel or circuit work
- Any duct repair, sealing or testing
- The permit and inspection
- What is not included, stated plainly
To get there, we need a few facts: your approximate house size, whether you have ducts, and a photo or description of your electrical panel. With those, we can write a quote. If we need to see something in person, we will say so and book a survey.
FAQ
How much does a heat pump cost to install in Mar Vista?
It depends on capacity, ducted or ductless, the electrical panel and the ducts. We do not print a flat number because two homes rarely match. The quote is written before work starts, with each line shown.Do I need a new electrical panel?
Sometimes. If your panel has spare capacity, you may only need a new circuit. If it is full or old, a panel upgrade may be part of the job. Send a photo of the panel and we can tell you which way it is likely to go.Is a ducted or ductless heat pump cheaper?
Neither is always cheaper. Ducted works well when your ducts are in good shape. Ductless can be simpler when there are no ducts or the ducts need heavy repair. The layout of your home decides it.Does a heat pump need a permit?
Yes. Replacing a furnace, heat pump, AC or ductwork in California is permitted work. In Mar Vista the permit is issued by LADBS, and we take care of it.Ready to price your heat pump?
