Your Mar Vista AC is running, the air from the vents is barely cool, and someone has already added refrigerant once. A system does not burn through refrigerant, so a unit that needs more has a leak, and AC refrigerant leak repair means finding that leak before anything goes back in. Request a written quote or a leak inspection and we will set up the visit.
What the recharge costs and what the leak repair adds
The recharge is the part with a firm number. A straightforward 2-pound recharge now runs $219 to $540 depending on market availability. That figure covers the refrigerant going in. It does not cover the work of closing the leak, because nobody can price that until the leak is located. See our AC repair service for the full list of what we fix on cooling systems.
What moves the leak repair price:
- Where the leak is: a fitting at the outdoor unit is a different job from a pinhole in the indoor coil
- How much of the line set is reachable without opening a wall or ceiling
- Which refrigerant the system holds, since the cost per pound differs
- Whether the leaking part is a small repair or a part that has to be swapped out
- Time to evacuate the system and weigh the charge back in
You approve a written quote before we start. If the number does not make sense next to the unit, you can say no at that point.
How we find the leak
Adding refrigerant and hoping is not a repair. The visit runs in a set order:
- We read the pressures and compare them to what the system should show
- We check the coil, the fittings, the service valves and the line set for oil residue, which marks a leak
- We run a leak detector over the joints and the coil
- If the system is low, we isolate sections and watch for a pressure drop to find the one that is losing charge
Once the leak is found, you see where it is and what it takes to close it. Your quote lists the repair, the evacuation, the recharge and any part, each on its own line, with the total at the bottom.
Repair the leak or replace the system
This is the decision the quote has to help you make. A leak in an accessible fitting is a contained repair. A leak in a buried coil can cost close to what a replacement coil or a new outdoor unit costs, and at that point you are comparing two real numbers.
Ask for both on paper. When the repair and the replacement sit next to each other, the choice stops being a guess. Tell us on the form if you want us to price a replacement alongside the repair, and the walkthrough ends with both totals.
The refrigerant in your system changes the job
R-22 is no longer produced, so repairs on an R-22 system depend on reclaimed refrigerant. That affects supply and cost, and it is a reason to weigh a replacement before you pay for a large repair on an older R-22 unit.
New residential split AC and heat pump systems are now built with lower-GWP A2L refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32. If a leak points you toward replacing the system, that is the refrigerant the new unit will use.
Replacing an AC in California is permitted work. In Mar Vista the permit comes through LADBS, and electric service is LADWP. On a change-out, Title 24 can require duct sealing and a leakage test verified by a third-party HERS rater who is not the installer, depending on the scope. We pull the permit and book the inspection, and both appear as lines in the written quote. See our AC installation service if a new system is the better call.
Why a leak should not wait
A system running low on charge works harder to cool the same rooms. The coil can get cold enough to ice over, and a system left running in that state strains the compressor. The compressor is the expensive part, so a leak caught early keeps a repair a repair.
If you also want the unit checked on a schedule after the fix, our AC maintenance service includes a refrigerant level check. We serve Mar Vista, Palms, Del Rey, Venice and Culver City, and we answer around the clock if the unit fails at night.
Refrigerant leak repair questions
Can you just top off the refrigerant and leave?
We can, and the recharge price above applies. But a charge that leaks out again means you pay for refrigerant twice. We recommend finding the leak first, and the quote shows the leak repair as its own line so you decide.
Will I know the price before you start?
Yes. You get a written quote for the leak repair and the recharge before any work begins. You approve the number or you decline it.
What if the leak is in the indoor coil?
Then the quote covers the coil repair or a coil replacement, and we show the cost against a full system replacement so you can compare both.
Do you service units from every manufacturer?
Yes. We service AC systems of all major brands, and the leak check works the same way on each.
Is a refrigerant leak a reason to replace the whole AC?
Sometimes, depending on where the leak is and what the repair costs next to a new system. We price both when you ask, and you choose with the totals in front of you.
If your AC is losing charge, call (877) 552-7520 and Mar Vista AirCon will book the leak inspection and write your quote.
